THE YEAR OF SYF'11

Hello!~

Read Ying Yee's post and I thought I should might as well post something regarding NYSE as well. (: We have attained Gold with Honours. However, I want to emphasize again that this is not what we had been working so hard for. It was the 10 minutes (or less) on stage where we show our very best, show what NYSE is made of that we have worked months and months for. I would say that it was an difficult and hard journey that we have walked through since the end of year of 2010. We have prepared so long and hard for the mere 10 minutes on stage. Logically speaking, was it worth it? Not really. We should have been given at least 2 hours to repeatedly play our pieces that we have been working on for the 6 months or so. However, it was because how we played our very best due to our hard work that made it all worthwhile. Imagine if we had performed the same pieces after only two months of preparation maybe this year January. Would it have sounded the same? Would we feel the same ecstasy we felt after we performed on stage on April 28th? I would believe that the answer is no.

The SYF journey had been a tough journey. We have witnessed many people leaving the SYF team due to various reasons and we certainly felt the fear in our hearts that we may be one of the people to leave the SYF team as well. It was unfortunate for those who have left us after working alongside us for so many months. However, we should all understand and respect the decisions made were equally hard and thoroughly considered. Although sad, they definitely felt the NYSE spirit and I would believe they feel happy for the ensemble as well.

The NYSE spirit. What is it? To me, the NYSE spirit is the certain bond we all share. It is the spirit we all have to improve ourselves constantly, to not want anything but the best. We would constantly strive for the best, being a perfectionist for everything, all the effort to show what NYSE can do on the performance day itself. It is not only for SYF, but for every single performance we are part of. Be it SYF or a roadside performance, NYSE would certainly do their best in performing. It is not true that we always have that mentality in our minds. However, we should always strive to keep that in mind. That is the true spirit of NYSE. It is just through the SYFs every two years where we feel the NYSE spirit stronger than ever.

Through this, I hope that the juniors would lead the section and contribute to the ensemble well and truly show the NYSE spirit, sustaining the spirit. The spirit should not be relived every two years, only on the SYF years but it should be consistently shown in every single batch.

Will we lose the NYSE spirit or will we continue to live up to the NYSE spirit? I certainly hope its the latter.

It's like, 2 days after SYF and I'm still excited.
WE GOT GOLD WITH HONOURS honours honours honours honours
Hehe. Echo. Like Republic Poly's acoustics.

I was just listening to the recording of the release of results and I jumped at the "gold with honours" after "Nanyang Girls' High School".
Best moment ever.
Reliving it. LOL.
Goes to show how excited I still am. :)

I have to say 1 very important thing: I FELT THE NYSE SPIRIT COME BACK.
At some point after the '09 SYF year, ensemble just sort of became really boring, and not fun (because Joan Fun left, get it? Joking). The enthusiasm and motivation wasn't there. To add to it all, the camp didn't really bring everyone together. We bonded, but not so much spiritually. (Thank you EXCO for planning it, though. Did a marvelous job of balancing practising and play (: ) However, on our way to SYF, the NYSE spirit started coming back. On the day itself, you can just feel it. It's there. Stronger than ever. A magical feeling, I'm calling it.
I hope it will continue being there, even after my batchmates and I leave. The enthusiasm, the motivation, the FUN. Because this is what ensemble is about. At least to me (although I do believe many others feel this way as well).

Previously, I have to admit I didn't fully understand the "Proud to be tangle in Strings" thing. I was proud because we work really hard and we play hard too, proud of the seniors' achievements- of making this an awesome ensemble and that I'm a part of it.

Now, I am truly and absolutely proud. I guess I feel that our hard work finally paid off- those sectionals, those prep talks, the worrying, the nervousness, the comforting, the working together. Proud because it's US, not me or I or you, but US.

We proved that we can do this.

One of the judges of the SYF said, "Ensemble-ship isn't about many soloists getting together trying to sound like an ensemble but an ensemble trying to sound like a soloist." I thought it was so meaningful, so it got stuck in my head.

Looking forward to a fantastic year ahead working on FOA and working with NYSE! :)

Honestly, comparing this year and last year SYF's standard and comparing last year's SYF with last last last year's SYF standard, the only conclusion is that our standard has been dropping, and dropping, and dropping. But it's just 2 days before the big day, so let's JIAYOU as a section :D Play together! Play out loud! Play sensitively! Play and look up! Play with emotions! Play with movement! PLAY AS AN ENSEMBLE D: But anyway, JIAYOU JIAYOU JIAYOU! There's still um, 2 days D: plus another 2 days in New York D: before the actual actual big day, there's still time to practice so let's really really work hard D: And put our smelliest foot forward :D We can't all keep relying on Joan (oops! guilty D:)

Anw, I bet most will read this afterrr New York so, let's continue to JIAYOU for end-of-year concert! The pieces will be hard D: Heaven to Joan, Earth to Joan, Heaven and Earth to Joan D: Let's make her job easier by cooperating and practising really hard after New York! Violists outing is over! Haha! Ok anw for holidays let's arrive early for sectionals and eat section lunch after CCA (only SOME cca days, not all) :D More section bonding (tentative only)to make up for the lack of section lunches before the holidays :D Greatest thanks to Victoria for the renting of the BBQ pit (and absorbing some of the costs)and Joan for buying all the food (which reminds me.. $7.40)! Not forgetting Mars (main extinguisher of big fires using water oO)and Regina (also for your chicken thighs- which my brother loved to eat.. after it was recooked xD) and Fiona (thank you for the eating the potatoes too)for being the main cookers and of course, everyone for eating the food (considering the fact that it tasted pretty wierd):D HAHA. Anw anw 24 days to New York! Let's JIAYOU :D and yixuan must jiayou in TE also :D Some relevant pictures are below :D

Hi... first time posting. it's like so late. i shall make this fast.
I dunno wat to say actually... Hmm.
Viola is a bit troublesome. since i have to bring it to sku on thursdays. (rmb, i m in TE, only on thurs)

but then, quite nice sound. Actually, i never took strings ensemble as my cca becos i liked it. It was becos i had to. Because i am in HMP, and i have to take a 2nd instrument.

But then, i like the cca now. :D cos i have NICE seniors. (but sometimes they are evil. hehe) and i have a erm... gd viola teacher? (is mr sze a gd teacher? nvm. maybe a BAD teacher. jk.)

But ONE BAD THING. i now have to practise both my piano and my viola. and my music instrus course fees all add up to be like five hundred plus. SO EXPENSIVE!!! my mum was freaking out.
nvm. i hope i can cope wif this...
